"It's The Only Movie Where Everyone Dies": 18 Movies That Said "No Thanks" To Hollywood Endings, And Left Everyone Completely Gutted

Marley & Me has the saddest yet most realistic ending of all-time, and I'll die on that hill.

We all love a fairytale ending every now and then. But sometimes, we just want the real thing. No last-minute miracles, no rom-com reconciliations at an airport — just raw and real conclusions.

Over on r/Cinema, movie lovers are sharing the films that didn't have a classic Hollywood ending. Here are 18 of the best responses.

*Warning: spoilers ahead!*

1. "Monsters University. They make an all-or-nothing 'pie in the sky' gamble, fail, and lose everything. Next, there’s a montage of them doing the hard work, and it slowly pays off with gradual success."

"And then, 10-15 years later, their scare training is rendered obsolete by new tech."

RiskyMama

Animated characters Sulley, a large furry monster, and Mike, a small round monster with one eye, stand in a doorway holding suitcases

2. "La La Land ends like real life does sometimes: with the right people at the wrong time. No dramatic reunion, no last-minute fix. Just two people who loved each other, chased their dreams, and ended up waving from opposite sides of the finish line. It’s messy, kinda beautiful, and way too familiar."

jcrispav

Two people joyfully dance on a hilltop at sunset, one in a bright dress and the other in a shirt and tie. City lights twinkle in the background

3. "Marriage Story. I watched it during the beginning of my divorce, hoping for the Hollywood happy ending. It turned out way too much like real life!"

otherelbow

Three people lay closely on a bed; a teddy bear is by their side. One person appears visibly emotional, while another reads a book

4. "Uncut Gems was one of the most stressful movies to watch. You see Sandler's character dig his own grave step by step...And when we get our ending, it's like: 'Damn! The mob don't fuck around.' I expected broken bones, but we definitely got something closer to what probably happens in reality."

Man in a leather jacket holds a gold pendant in a jewelry store, engaging with two people nearby

5. "Anora. Super realistic ending in a Cinderella story that I was not expecting."

Easy_Clock_9541

Person with long hair sits in a car, looking pensively out of an open door. Snow is visible outside

6. "Requiem for a Dream. This movie fundamentally changed me as a human. I felt different after watching it."

SwagUzi69

Two people are engaged in an emotional conversation. The person facing the camera is wearing a plaid jacket with a fur-trimmed hood

8. "The Big Short. I like the way they made a mock summary about how everything changed. The banks got regulated and the responsible people got punished, only to reveal that this is America..."

MBTheGinger

Two people surrounded by scattered papers in an office; one is seated on the floor, extending a document towards the other, who is bending over a desk

9. "Reservoir Dogs. It's the only movie I can think of where literally everyone dies in the end."

Mekroval

Group of men walking down a street, dressed in black suits and sunglasses, resembling classic movie gangsters

10. "Denzel Washington's Flight. He's humbled himself before the world, got sober, and is happily doing his time in prison. But his young son confronts him at the end, insisting that he tells the truth about himself."

Into_the_Mystic_2021

Man in pilot uniform stands in doorway, looking outside with a serious expression, heavy rain pouring down

11. "The Mist. It's a nasty ending and I hate it, but I do have to admit that it's pretty accurate as to what could happen in real life."

NerdGuy13

Silhouettes of people standing in fog, looking towards a bright light source

12. "Coach Carter. Incredible movie. Just the message that you can have all the skills and popularity, but it doesn't translate to success. With all that hard work you put in, you still have to learn how to lose. That losing can be heartbreaking, especially when you give it your all."

machinehead-

A group of well-dressed men walk confidently on a basketball court. The central figure wears a long coat

13. "8 Mile. By the end, he wins a rap battle tournament and everybody starts to respect him more. But there's no cliché where some guy waiting outside offers him a record deal or a life-changing opportunity. Right after the battle, Jimmy goes back to his late-night shift at work, he then bids his friends goodbye, and life goes on."

Puzzleheaded-Wing835

Person in a winter hat, sitting alone on a bus, gazing out the window in thought

I_AM_DEATH-INCARNATE

"It seemed to be marketed as a rom-com, so I was kind of blindsided by how traumatic it was, lol. I was expecting 'goofy, light-hearted, everything works out,' and got slapped with reality."

Chuckitybye

"I have learned that Vince Vaughn movies are no longer for me. They always seem like shallow comedies, and end up dealing with way more emotional trauma than I want in stupid entertainment."

bamacpl4442

Scene from a movie with two people sitting apart on a couch, looking upset. The room is messy, and the windows show a nighttime city view

16. "No Country for Old Men. No wild underdog story, no 'handsome protagonist getting the happy ending.' It's bleak, dark, and violent: exactly like what would happen if someone got wrapped up in cartel violence. IMO, a masterpiece of a film."

damnitA-Aron

A scene from a film with a man in a leather jacket being handcuffed by a sheriff in a cowboy hat and sunglasses in a desert landscape

17. "Seven. The bad guy is dead but it feels like he won. Morgan Freeman's closing quote really frames the bleakness."

JohnGibblet

Two men in discussion; one in a leather jacket and tie, the other in a trench coat and hat, standing near a patterned tile floor

18. "Marley & Me. A realistic depiction of owning a hyperactive Labrador until they break your fucking heart by leaving you. That moment where he closes his eyes. I wept buckets."

BalasaarNelxaan

A man and woman happily greet a Labrador retriever inside a warmly decorated home, sharing a joyful moment with the dog

After reading all of these, I'm starting to think I might prefer realistic endings over Hollywood ones. And now? I have a serious watchlist to catch up on.🍿🍿
